Orleans, LA; Brennan&#8217;s, Jazz, the WWII Museum and Dakar Restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our flight from San Antonio to New Orleans was again uneventful.\u00a0 The TSA seemed to be fully manned and security was a breeze.\u00a0 The &#8220;Schumer Shutdown&#8221; continues to have zero impact on our travels.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived at our condo and soon met up with our first set of travel partners for Myra&#8217;s birthday.\u00a0 There would be 6 to start with, which would turn into 12 of us by the 3rd day.<\/p>\n<p>We ate at the famous <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennansneworleans.com\/\">Brennan&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>, which has been around since 1946.\u00a0 The food was pretty good, and the famous dessert &#8220;Bananna&#8217;s Foster&#8221; that was invented here was a must order!\u00a0 Here is a quick video as our host was preparing the dessert.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bananna's Foster at it's birthplace, dinner.\u00a0 The interior of Brennan&#8217;s is beautiful, particularly when it&#8217;s being graced by this group!<\/p>\n<p><a 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had to walk pretty far down the street to actually find some jazz music.\u00a0 We ended up at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fritzelsjazz.com\/\">&#8220;Fritzel&#8217;s Jazz Bar&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>, the oldest operating jazz bar in New Orleans.\u00a0 It&#8217;s located in a historic building from 1831, with the jazz bar opening in 1969.\u00a0 We spent about an hour listening to &#8220;Fritzel&#8217;s All Stars&#8221;, and damn were they good!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a little snippet.<\/p>\n<p><iframe frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The next morning our group walked 15 minutes south from our condo to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/\">National WWII Museum<\/a><\/strong>, an attraction that was built since we were last here in 2002.\u00a0 Anybody that knows me knows I&#8217;m a <strong>huge<\/strong> WWII history buff, and this is the best WWII museum in the world!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606510322706845509582579174136.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12522\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The museum starts with a rather hokey train simulator where you pick up a dog tag of a specific soldier that you can interact with in multiple locations of the museum.\u00a0 Not my thing, but the simulation was interesting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-1760651724242903522537064430493.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12524\" src=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-1760651724242903522537064430493.jpg\" alt=\"\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Likely the most in-depth portion of the museum covers D-Day.\u00a0 The original intent of the museum was to only cover D-Day, but they ended up deciding to cover the entirety of the war.\u00a0 They definitely went out of their way to cover D-Day in exhausting detail.\u00a0 Below is a depiction of a pillbox overlooking Omaha Beach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606519005695353786567936367067.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12526\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The museum is full of interesting items, this one being &#8220;Rupert&#8221;, a dummy paratrooper that was dropped in various locations to throw off the Nazi&#8217;s as to the actual focus of Normandy.\u00a0 These were dropped complete with uniforms, boots and helmets, as well as with recordings of gunfire and exploding mortar rounds.\u00a0 A few actual paratroopers would drop with them and set off other effects such as flares and chemicals to simulate the smell of exploded shells.\u00a0 The allies really pulled out all the stops to ensure the Nazi&#8217;s had no idea where D-Day was actually occurring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606519439772969745109487799123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12527\" src=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606519439772969745109487799123.jpg\" alt=\"\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another interesting item on display was this &#8220;Jap Hunting License&#8221;, a novelty item that was quite popular shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was actually used as a promotional item for several companies at the time, this one from a printing company in Oxnard, CA.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606518168047253264489967375677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12525\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just outside the museum is this set of statues, called &#8220;Lest We Forget: The Mission&#8221;.\u00a0 The sculptor, Fredric Arnold, drew from his personal experience flying P-38&#8217;s, and was one of the few pilots to survive from his aviation class.\u00a0 Following the war, he vowed to convey the incalculable cost of war and pay tribute to the 88,000 U.S. Airmen killed during WWII.\u00a0 He completed this seven year project at the age of 94, just two years before his death in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606724023318273102666185497159.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12543\" src=\"https:\/\/petersontravels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wp-17606724023318273102666185497159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2000\"
