On the way from Valladolid to Salamanca, we took a large detour to see Segovia. This is home to one of the worlds best preserved Roman Aqueducts, as well as a very photogenic castle. The main reason I wanted to come here was to see the aqueduct. The castle was a bonus that we happened to see as we were driving to a restaurant.
The aqueduct was completed in 112 AD, and once transported water from from a river in the mountains 11 miles from the city. You can see it from miles away as you approach the city. Pretty impressive.
The food here was excellent and cheap. Wine came with the meal of the day, and they pour it into a huge pitcher, one for each person. It was the first time I think I’ve walked away from a restaurant without finishing the wine provided! I still had a 1.5 hour drive to Salamanca, and I didn’t want to find out how the Spanish treat their American inmates.
The castle reminds me of Disneyland. Unfortunately it was closed, and we really didn’t have time for a long tour regardless.
Have you sharpened your Español on your extended travels?
Segovia is impressive!
Not really. I think if anything I’ve discovered how little Spanish I really know. We are now back in Portugal. Just sitting down to do a little update. Hard to get used to the language differential!
