Trondheim, Norway; Northernmost Tram in the World, City Overview, Nidaros Cathedral

Our next stop was Trondheim, Norway, the third largest city in the country.  We had an excursion on the cities “old tram”, which has the distinction of being the northernmost tram in the world.  Our guide had us booked on one of only two historic trams left in Trondheim.

The interior of the tram is definitely old school!  It was a pretty cool trip up the hillside, far longer than I would have imagined, and we went right through a bunch of rural areas, so these trams are still used for commuting by the locals.

This control panel is every train geeks dream come true!  I’m not a train geek, but I know a few.

After departing the tram we had a bus pick us up and take us to our next destination, the Trondheim Ski Jump.  Here we saw their potential Olympic athletes training, without snow!

We really liked the statues some bank donated to the ski jump site.

Our last stop with the bus was this overlook over Trondheim.  In the middle of this photo is Nidaros Cathedral, a spot we will visit immediately following this tour.

We also had a view of our cruise ship!  Love this grain silos….they just add so much ambiance!

In the middle of this harbor is this fortress, which was used as an execution site for years, before it was converted into Trondheim’s version of Alcatraz.  Just like Alcatraz, it’s now simply a tourist attraction.  Wish we had more time!

After our bus dropped us off in the middle of the city, we made our way over to the Nidaros Cathedral.  This gothic cathedral was built over the burial place of King Olav II, the patron saint of the nation, who died in 1030.

The church was built between 1070 and 1300, so it sounds like they used a lot of CalTrans labor, taking an inordinately long time with way too many people on the payroll!  Perhaps the terribly long building period is the reason the interior is incredible!  That’s not artwork, that’s an actual photo….that I took!

This is looking the other direction in the church.  Wow!!

The organ is a piece of artwork all on it’s own!!  Holy moly!

Everywhere you look inside the cathedral is just gorgeous!

This statue is a testament to the original indigenous peoples of Norway, the Sami!

You could easily spend an hour in the crypt reading about all of the grave findings on this site.  This one photo is just a few of the items found during excavations for cathedral improvements.

We saw this little Statue of Liberty near where our ship was docked.  There was also some Harley Davidson stuff posted nearby, so I’m assuming this is a Biker Bar??

I saw this farm as we got underway from Trondheim, and it just glowed in the sun so much that I had to share it!

Coming up next, we visit the incredible Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site….and perhaps the most beautiful place in the world!
