New Zealand and Australia

We are tired of sleeping in every day and getting caught up on movies, so this Tuesday we are off on our next adventure, New Zealand and Australia!

I’ve been to Australia once, back in 1987 when I was in the Navy on this bucket of bolts.

This is the USS Cayuga (LST-1186).  LST stands for Landing Ship Tank, but Long Slow Target was far more accurate.

Getting off the ship in Australia was the best experience the Navy afforded me, as I was able to get liberty for 10 days (much to the chagrin of our Executive Officer, but that’s another story) and travel down the east coast from Gladstone to Sydney.  I loved Australia so much I intended to get back ASAP, but life has a way of getting in the way of such plans.

Kim has never been, and New Zealand/Australia has definitely been at the top of our travel list since well before retirment.   Kim even agreed to watch all three Lord of the Rings movies (we just finished ROTK today), which she has never seen, as preparation for some of the things we will see on our trip.  If you know Kim that’s a pretty big deal!  Not quite sure how we’ll get her to watch Star Wars….can’t exactly travel to Tatooine or Hoth (and Disneyland doesn’t count…way too crowded!).

We are spending 4 weeks in New Zealand, 2 weeks on a cruise from Auckland to Sydney, and then another 6 weeks in Australia.  Unfortunately our son will not be able to join us on this trip since he is in school.  We need somebody to watch the chickens anyway!  Like our last Portugal/Spain trip, I created a travel map so Kim can keep track of where we are going next.

I will be posting soon!

New feature…click on photos for full view

I’ve not been happy with how small some of the photos turn out on the blog, so I’m slowly working my way through all of the posts to make it so all photos can be expanded by clicking on them.

Unfortunately I can’t find a way for WordPress to do this via a bulk action, so it’s a bit of work.  However, I have worked back to Granada so far, and will finish the rest over the next few days.  Busy work is not my strong suit, so I have to do it in blocks to save my sanity!  Give it a try and let me know if something doesn’t seem to work right.

Update 5/25/20: I finally got around to completing this task for the entire blog (the Wuhan Flu has given me a lot of time lately), so if a photo doesn’t happen to pop up when you click on it, let me know.  Thanks.
